BOWEL CANCER
what is bowel cancer?
Bowel cancer, a rare cancer is a disease in which cells are cancerous (malignant) tissues of the small intestine. The small intestine is a long tube that is wound several times to fit inside the abdomen. It connects the stomach to the intestine. Most food is broken down in the small intestine to extract vitamins, minerals, fats, carbohydrates and proteins.
Stages of Small Intestine Cancer
once detected bowel cancer will become more tests to determine if cancer cells have spread to other parts of the body. Although there is a classification system for bowel cancer, for treatment, this cancer is divided according to cell type detected. There are four types of cancer found in the small intestine adenocarcinomas, lymphomas, sarcomas and carcinoid tumors.
Adenocarcinoma
Adenocarcinoma starts in the lining of the small intestine and is the most common type of cancer of the small intestine. These tumors occur most often in the small intestine that is closest to the stomach.
Lymphoma
Lymphoma of lymphoid tissue originating in the small intestine. Lymphatic tissue is part of the body’s immune system, which allows the body to fight infection.
Leiomyosarcoma
Leiomyosarcomas are cancers whose growth originates in the smooth muscle lining the small intestine.
Treatment
Using three kinds of treatment:
• Surgery (taking out the cancer)
• Radiation therapy (using high doses of x-rays to kill cancer cells)
• Chemotherapy (using drugs to kill cancer cells).
Treatment by stage
Treatments for bowel cancer will depend on the type of cancer, how far it has spread, general health status and age:
Small Intestine Adenocarcinoma
The patient may be one of the following treatments:
1. Surgery to remove the tumor.
2. Surgery for food in the small intestine cancer evades (forward)
3. Radiation therapy to relieve symptoms.
4. A clinical trial of radiation plus drugs to make cancer cells become more sensitive to radiation.
5. A clinical trial of chemotherapy or biological therapy.
LYMPHOMA OF THE SMALL INTESTINE
The patient may be one of the following treatments:
1. Surgery to remove the cancer and lymph nodes.
2. Surgery followed by chemotherapy
3. Chemotherapy with or without radiation therapy.
Small Intestine Leiomyosarcoma
The patient may be one of the following treatments:
1. Surgery to remove the cancer.
2. Surgery for food in the small intestine cancer evades (forward) if the cancer can not be extracted.
3. Radiotherapy.
4. Surgery, chemotherapy or radiation therapy to relieve symptoms.
5. A clinical trial of chemotherapy or biological therapy.
