Increasing rates of depression linked to daily stress?

A series of studies at Concordia University, there could be a link between increased rates of depression and increased life stress, says a press release from the institution.

One such study, conducted by Professor Mark Ellenbogen, shows that adolescents from families with one parent suffers from a mood disorder (depression or bipolar disorder) have higher salivary cortisol levels to other children. And these high levels persist in early adulthood. Cortisol is a hormone that is produced by the body in response to events and stressful life situations.
Although many causes may be involved in the elevation of cortisol levels, this increase may be partly due to exposure to stress family and education, says Dr. Ellenbogen. And, preliminary data show that high concentrations of cortisol during adolescence doubles the risk for a severe disorder of mood in early adulthood.

‘Previous studies have shown that children and adolescents from families at risk are at higher risk of psychiatric disorder over their life, “says the researcher. We know they are not simply inherited these traits, but they have also been raised in a stressful, chaotic and unstructured. Our goal is to determine how this environment affects mental health of these children in adolescence and adult life. ”

It is particularly alarming to see how cases of depression among young people growing a generation to another, “said the researcher. Stress may be an important factor, he believes.
