Slimming Hormone

• This finding may explain some aspects of the success of low carb diets, give new ideas to produce medicines for weight loss and may one day help doctors to recommend scientifically designed diet plans tailored to each individual.

• The scientists studied a hormone called FGF21, which is produced in the liver. Scientists already knew that the hormone helps to lower body weight, cholesterol and blood lipid levels. But they knew little about how it worked.

• To find out, scientists studied the hormone in mice under fed and fasting. Fasting caused levels of the hormone to rise.

• Other experiments located the biochemical trigger of the hormone, also found that the hormone sends a message to the liver to burn fat that had been stored elsewhere in the body.

• If all the discoveries made in mice apply to people, said one of the authors, the hormone could explain why people who take low-carb diets have extremely high levels of fat in your bloodstream. It could be said, because the hormone is sure to burn fat.

• Likewise, scientists announced that there is still plenty to see any results of new studies. Human studies are just beginning.
