Toxemia of Pregnancy

It is a condition that causes reduced the arrival of food and oxygen to the baby, preventing adequate growth in the uterus. Also favors a decrease in the volume of amniotic fluid (fluid that protects the baby), and in extreme cases can cause abruptio placenta, associated with numerous health risks of the child.

Considerations
Also known as preeclampsia or hypertension in pregnancy. It is a disease that affects between five to 10% of pregnant women. This usually occurs during the second half of pregnancy. It occurs most frequently in women with poor nutrition during pregnancy in women whose first pregnancy occurred before age 20 or after age 30, or multiple pregnancies. This condition is most likely to affect pregnant women with preexisting heart disease, diabetes or hypertension.

Causes
We do not know the exact origin of this disease, but some possible causes: disorders of the defense system of own body (autoimmunity), vascular problems, diet or genetic predisposition (hereditary).

Events
The affected complains:
* Headaches (by increasing blood pressure)
* Swelling of hands, face and feet (edema)
Weight gain (more than 1 kg per week) or this sudden increase in one or two days
* Abdominal pain
* Agitation
* Decreased amount of urine
* Nausea and vomiting
* Blurred vision
* In severe cases there may be convulsions
